EU: roaming prices fall, good (and cheaper) messages for a holiday

Good news to travellers in the EU who experienced a “bill shock” having used their cell phone during their travels.

On 10 May, the European Parliament adopted an agreement to cut down mobile roaming prices to people travelling in the EU, and EU citizens going abroad.

Until now there was no limit to the cost of data transmission through roaming in the EU.

According to the agreement, which will enter into force on 1 July this year -new euro-tariff will restrict maximum price for data transmission to 70 EUR cents per 1 megabyte in 2012, to 45 EUR cents in 2013, and finally to 20 EUR cents in 2014.

Retail price per minute for roaming calls will also decrease from the current 35 EUR cents to 29 EUR on 1 July, 2012 to 19 EUR cents in 2014.
SMS will become cheaper as prices fall from 11 to 9 EUR cents, and from 1 July 2014, the maximum price of one SMS will be only 6 EUR cents.

From 1 July, 2012 citizens of the Community will be sent various types of communication, such as a warning message when they approach 50 Euros of charges in a month (excluding VAT).

EU customers will also be able to buy their domestic and roaming services separately from different operators, if they wish, whilst keeping the same phone number. Since there will be no additional costs for switching providers, this aspect of the agreement will certainly boost competition among mobile providers.

To conclude, the maximum tariffs for individual customers (excluding VAT) during the period from 01.07.2012 to 01.07.2014 are as following:

– Data services (per megabyte)
now – no limits
new – 70 EUR cents
2013 – 45 EUR cents
2014 – 20 EUR cents

– Outgoing calls (per minute)
today – 35 EUR cents
new – 29 EUR cents
2013 – 24 EUR cents
2014 – 19 EUR cents

– Incoming calls (per minute)
today – 11 EUR cents
new – 8 EUR cents
2013 – 7 EUR cents
2014 – 5 EUR cents

today – 11 EUR cents
new – 9 EUR cents
2013 – 8 EUR cents
2014 – 6 EUR cents

Wishing you great holidays with reduced roaming prices!
